Stop Motion Workshop

Immerse yourself in a hands-on stop-motion animation workshop where participants work in pairs to create their own miniature animated stories using tabletop stages. Using a range of craft materials, participants design and build their own characters, props, and scenery before bringing their ideas to life frame by frame.

Each workstation provides themed story prompts aligned with the festival theme, while still allowing participants the freedom to create their own short story within the same narrative structure. Stories are developed using a simple six-stage storyboard framework that guides participants through planning, building, and animating their scenes.

The workshop focuses on key filmmaking and animation skills including story planning, miniature set design, animation movement, lighting, and camera framing. Participants learn how small movements and careful positioning can create the illusion of motion and bring their characters and environments to life.

Regular group check-ins help participants refine their ideas, stay on track, and share progress. The workshop concludes with a showcase of the completed animations and a short reflection on the creative process.

We will also take a short lunch break during the workshop, so please remember to bring a snack.

This workshop is made possible through the support of Cairns Regional Council and Flame.arts.
